DIMAPUR: RML Cancer Foundation (RMLCF) conducted Phase 2 of its blood donation drive at the NHAK Blood Bank, Kohima, with 33 voluntary donors contributing towards strengthening the blood supply for patients in need.
A total of 33 donations were recorded.
The drive was organised in response to the continuing need for readily available blood in hospitals. According to the Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), citing the Voluntary Blood Donors Association of Nagaland (VBDAN), Nagaland requires approximately 20,000 units of blood annually. Regular voluntary donation was crucial, as dependence on donors only during emergencies can lead to delays when patients urgently require blood.
For RMLCF, the initiative held particular significance due to its ongoing work with cancer patients. Cancer and treatments such as chemotherapy can cause anaemia and reduce blood cell or platelet counts, often necessitating repeated transfusions. Readily available blood is therefore essential for timely and uninterrupted care.
Through its annual blood donation drive, RMLCF aims to encourage a stronger culture of regular, voluntary donation-where people give not only during emergencies but also to ensure blood is available whenever patients need it.
