Despite this newspaper, on several occasions, having published photos of heaps of garbage lying unattended at various places in Dimapur, no effort has been made to dispose them while residents and pedestrians are forced to bear the foul aroma emitting from them.
The empty spaces near Naga Shopping Arcade (Super Market) have become a garbage dump where heaps of rotting trash have been lying for weeks. The ugly sight is a disgrace to the commercial city of the state. With onset of summer and monsoon, the rotting garbage also poses grave health hazard on the public. Unfortunately, the DMC appears to be unmindful of the terrible sight and smell emitting from the rotting garbage.
Speaking to this reporter here on Saturday, a shopkeeper in Naga Arcade also complained that the market has turned into an unhygienic place and that the unhygienic environment was a daily hazard not only to shop keepers but also shoppers.
Though she admitted that the DMC was not entirely to be blamed but regretted that the civic body has also been slack in timely disposal of garbage. However, the lady also strongly felt that civic sense was totally lacking among the public and unless this trend was changed, Dimapur will become one of the dirtiest city in the state and even perhaps the north east.
Another shop keeper said the DMC should set up garbage collecting bins at every locality to accommodate garbage in order to ease collection and disposal.
The shopkeeper also wanted the authorities including the business community to spread awareness on maintain hygienic environment and instil a sense of responsibility among public.
Heaps of garbage and litter is a common sight at several localities such as Signal Basti, West Yard Colony, Khermahal, Midland, railway station, Blue Hill bus station area and the stretch along the airport near 2 ½ Mile.
