Railway Protection Force (RPF), Dimapur has seized contrabands, foreign cigarettes and suspected brown sugar worth Rs 64,93,300 since January 1 this year and registered 11 cases in this regard.
Talking to media persons here on Thursday, assistant security commissioner RPF Dimapur Somnath Chakraborty disclosed that the force had also rescued 15 minors– seven boys and eight girls– from the clutches of child traffickers and handed them over to Childline. Further, to ensure safety of woman travellers, especially those travelling alone, he said RPF was maintaining extra vigil and requested travellers to call the toll-free number 139 to register complaints, if any, and assured swift action.
He also disclosed that around 30 to 40 complaints were being received on daily basis by the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR), of which three to four complains were from Dimapur station.
As both Dimapur and Shokhüvi railway stations were gateways to Nagaland, he said RPF was committed to provide safety and security to all travellers. He also said that RPF was maintaining vigil 24/7 on Dimapur railway station as it was one of the main stations through which contraband items were being transported.
He asserted that the force was duty-bound to provide safety and security to all railway passengers, and assured that it was 100% committed to carry out its task without any hindrance.
The assistant security commissioner divulged that the RPF was now authorised to impose fine on any individual found littering or smoking in trains and railways stations.
Somnath said the RPF, in its endeavour to free railway station premises from illegal hawking, carried out relentless drives across stations against illegal and unauthorized hawkers/vendors, smokers and litterers.
He also divulged that RPF had realised Rs 10.54 lakh through fines and 4,661 persons were prosecuted for various crimes under relevant sections of The Railways Act, 1989.
