Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) organised a two-day cleanliness drive at NH-2 on October 29 and 30 on the theme “mission-clean highway” as a prelude to RSU platinum jubilee celebration which would be held in 2022. The event was launched by ADC Tseminyu, W. Manphai Phom.
In a press release, RSU media cell informed that during the launch, ADC lauded the students for taking up such noble community service and assured his support towards the movement.
The cleanliness drive covered approximately 28 km under the jurisdiction of Tseminyu sub-division. About 2000 kg of non-biodegradable waste viz. trashes, wrappers, plastic bottles, etc., were collected along the stretches of NH-2.
RSU expressed serious concern over the “reckless dumping” of building construction materials and stone quarrying activities in the highway which it said were obstructing free vehicular traffic, causing damage to newly constructed highway and posed potential risk for road mishaps.
The union also witnessed landslides, rock fall and sinking areas in various locations requiring immediate interventions.
In this regard, RSU urged the administration, TK engineering and village councils of the highway area to collectively take corrective measures.
“The much needed good roads have become a reality after long wait, now it is also the responsibility of the citizens to take care of the roads and make the highway green, clean and hassle free travel zone”, RSU stated.
Altogether, 55 volunteers took part in the cleanliness drive.
