SHILLONG, SEP 8: Indian woman footballer Sanfida Nongrum was felicitated as Meghalaya’s ‘Achiever of the Month’ (Sports Edition) by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma at a ceremony held at his official Good Wood bungalow on Tuesday. Nongrum was recognised for her achievements and contribution to Indian football during the year and was among 47 outstanding sportspersons from different disciplines honoured during the programme.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said the initiative was aimed at recognising individuals who have made notable contributions in various fields and encouraging others through their achievements. He noted that sports associations in the state had earlier faced challenges due to limited government support, but assured that these were being addressed through investments in infrastructure and assistance to associations, coaches and athletes.
Sangma described Meghalaya’s Sports Policy as a “vision document” guiding the state towards long-term sporting goals, reiterating the government’s focus on youth and emphasising that investments in sports programmes should be seen as investments in the future of Meghalaya. Congratulating the achievers, he said sporting success was about more than medals and recognition, urging them to inspire others through their journey.
During the programme, the chief minister also interacted with athletes, coaches and representatives, responding to queries and suggestions regarding support for participation in national and international competitions and incentives for medal-winning athletes.
