DIMAPUR, AUG 11 (NPN): Sangphur FC emerged victorious in the 4th Metümnyo Festival Football Championship, defeating Shamatorian FC 1–0 in a thrilling final on August 10 at Sangphur Village.
The championship, organized as part of the Metümnyo festival celebrations, saw the participation of 16 clubs from across the district. The final match showcased spirited performances from both sides, but Sangphur FC managed to secure the decisive goal and lift the coveted Champions Cup.
Shamatorian FC secured the runners-up title. In the third-place playoff, Middle Sporting FC edged out Challenger FC 5–4 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.
In the individual awards, the Golden Ball award was bagged by Lakiumong S.; Golden Glove by Kiutong Janger (Sangphur FC); and Golden Boot: T. Dolun (Challenger FC) – 6 goals.
Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports (YRS), S. Keoshu, graced the occasion as chief guest. In his address, he expressed gratitude to the Department of Youth Resources & Sports for sponsoring the tournament and emphasized the department’s commitment to nurturing grassroots talent. He also thanked the Shamator District Football Association (SDFA) and Sangphur Village Students’ Union for successfully conducting the 4th edition of the championship.
Keoshu urged players to uphold discipline and avoid immoral activities, alcohol and intoxicants, stressing that only a healthy lifestyle can help athletes achieve their goals.
He assured the Shamator Football Association of continued support, including coaching and technical assistance, to further uplift football in the district.
