A one-day training program on food preservation and farmer-scientist interaction was conducted at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS, NU), Medziphema Campus, facilitated by the Farmers’ Cell, SAS NU on March 7.
The event aimed to empower 40 women farmers from the adopted villages of Farmers’ Cell, SAS NU (Sirhima, Sirhi Angami and Hekeshe villages) with practical knowledge on food preservation techniques to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.
The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, Associate Prof. and Farmers’ Cell in-charge. The inaugural session was graced by Prof. L. Daiho, Dean of SAS, NU, who highlighted the significance of value-added products and the vital role of women in agriculture. Prof. J. Longkumer, Associate Dean, SAS, NU, also encouraged participants to engage actively in the training to maximize their learning experience.
Dr. Sabhithi Pawan, Assistant Prof, Entomology Department, led the first session on beneficial insects, teaching farmers their role in sustainable agriculture. Dr. Rokohlu Keditsu, Associate Prof, Horticulture Department, demonstrated food preservation techniques, including the preparation of mixed vegetable pickles and Amla Murabba (gooseberry sweet).
The afternoon session featured a Farmer-Scientist Interaction, where farmers discussed local challenges with experts, receiving tailored solutions based on research.
Prof. Akali Sema, Pro Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, graced the valedictory session, emphasizing the broad community impact of training women farmers and the importance of empowering women to uplift entire communities. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Lanunola Tzudir, Assistant Prof, Agronomy Department, SAS, NU.
