Kohima District Congress Committee (KDCC) took out a “Save Nagaland, Save India” rally, in support of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, from Congress Bhavan here to Kohima Indoor TT Stadium on Tuesday in association with Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency Congress Committee (ACCC).
Addressing the gathering, NPCC working president Khriedi Theünuo said the rally was a part of an outreach programme aimed at raising questions on economy and political centralisation, while encouraging people from all walks to life to be part of this and fight for peace. He also appealed to Nagas to wake up for change and called upon all like-minded people to come forward and join the rally.
With BJP firm on implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Theünuo cautioned that if UCC was enforced, it would be a threat to Nagaland and Article 371(A) that is in place. He said that the rights of the people would be taken away and at the same time supress the Naga identity and that Naga culture and traditions would be lost forever.
Theünuo went on to state that people had no regard for the state government, alleging that the latter was not governing and taking care of the welfare of the people. He pointed out that if any issue arises or incidents take place, the government would end up forming committee one after another, which he termed as an “excuse” to delay solving the matter.
Theünuo cited several examples of incomplete road and other projects and exhorted the people to stand up against the State government on this and the government’s misuse of power, adding that the poor were becoming poorer and the rich were becoming richer.
Pointing out that Nagas had the wrong notion that they were not paying income tax, Theünuo, however, reminded that Nagas have been levied with all types of taxes through GST.
Terming development activities around the State Capital as temporary only during the Hornbill Festival, he remarked that the State government needed to take things seriously and concentrate on people’s welfare and not just show to tourists.
Referring to the road project that was pending and remained incomplete, even as the toll tax gate had been constructed, he said this showed the government’s incompetency.
He also said that several projects have failed see the light of the day in the State and accused the government of merely giving false assurances to the concerned agencies who come to Nagaland to implement the projects.
The NPCC working president also referred to land compensation issues, which was hindering many infrastructure projects in the State, and urged the authorities concerned to talk to landowners in this regard, and not the State government.
The meeting was chaired by KDCC president Kevi Vizo, while invocation was done by PCC member, 8th Western, Selie Chase.
