The Supreme Court of India will launch “Samadhan Samaroh” – a mediation-driven initiative aimed at resolving over 45,000 pending cases – under the guidance of Chief Justice Surya Kant. Scheduled from August 21 to 23, the programme seeks to deliver “doorstep justice” by facilitating settlements through mediation and Lok Adalat mechanisms. A circular issued by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) described the initiative as a major step toward reducing case pendency by encouraging consensual dispute resolution in suitable matters identified by the apex court.
Highlighting the scale of the exercise, the SCBA said 45,098 cases across various categories have been shortlisted for potential settlement. Advocates have been urged to actively participate by identifying matters fit for mediation, with cooperation from the Bar deemed crucial for success. A high-level meeting chaired by the CJI on April 21, attended by senior judges, the Attorney General, Solicitor General, and Bar representatives, finalized the plan. The SCBA will soon circulate a Google Form to collect case details from advocates, ensuring broad participation in the initiative.
