DIMAPUR: State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Tongpang L. Jamir, along with program coordinator, Ashe Kiba, visited the polling station at Ward‑11 (Chaara) under Chümoukedima Town Council on Tuesday to assess accessibility measures for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) during the by‑election.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed facilities provided to ensure a barrier‑free voting experience, including the availability of a wheelchair and access ramp. He also interacted with ADC and Returning Officer, T. Lemlila Sangtam, regarding arrangements for PwD voters.
It was informed that two registered PwD voters were attached to the polling station. One had already exercised their franchise in the morning, while polling officials awaited the arrival of the second. Senior citizens and PwD voters were accorded priority and assisted in casting their votes.
Appreciating the efforts of election authorities, Tongpang emphasised the importance of ensuring that all eligible voters, including persons with disabilities, are able to participate in the democratic process with dignity, independence and ease. The visit formed part of the Commissioner’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive electoral practices across the state.
