Seluophemi celebrates Sükrünye

Seluophemi celebrated Sükrünye, the most significant festival of Chakhesang, with pageantry of colours and indigenous cultural presentation at Seluophe local ground here Thursday with retired Director of Agriculture Department, Lhiwepelo Mero, as the ‘Feast Father.’
The festival was ushered in by unfurling of Sükrünye Rakhü (festival flag) by Feast Father, blowing of horn (Thütsükükhu) which signifies triumph and victory and ‘Udothi’ which expresses joy and happiness of the blessings that God has bestowed.
Speaking at the festival, Feast Father Lhiwepelo Mero said the significance of Sükrünye is ‘father’s blessing’ to the children for the year in the field of academic career, games and sports etc. to bring success.
Stressing on the importance of today’s education and the advancement of technologies, Mero urged the youth to give first priority to studies and focus on the academic career since education has become very important and competitive.
He encouraged the village youth not to seek government job through political begging or bribe which has become the trend in the Naga society and challenged them to be self independent and compete rather than seeking the help of others.
He further requested the gathering and Chakhesang as a whole to remain united and maintain the good reputation that forefathers had sowed.
Cultural troupes of the village displayed spectacular rich culture and indigenous games like wrestling, Thimüsü, spot jump and climbing of bamboo pole also marked the day long Sükrünye.
Members from different communities, GBs, leaders and invitees joined the festival. Earlier, pastor CBCC invoked God’s blessing, while the welcome song was presented by Chakhesang youth Seluophe entitled ‘World’s best beauty,’ and welcome address delivered by village chairman.
Significance of Sükrünye was delivered by Nüvosa Hoshi and benediction was pronounced by Rev. Pitolu S. Keyho.
Other highlights of the programme included cultural display and competition, special tune by Chakhesang mothers group, prize distribution followed by festival feast.
