Seminar on tobacco hazards and COTPA 2003 in Peren

A one-day seminar on “The Ill Effects of Tobacco Consumption and COTPA 2003” was organised by the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Peren in collaboration with District Executive Force (DEF) Peren and District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Peren on September 29.
According to District Media Coordinator, CMO Office Peren, Shekho Sophie, the programme was chaired by Hoinichin, Social Worker, NTCP, while the opening prayer was invoked by Dr Hiazuheing Ndang, Pastor, Police Baptist Church, Peren.
Igwangheing Hemang, Superintendent of Police, Peren, in his address encouraged participants to avail services and seek early treatment related to tobacco use and mental health issues.
Neilasenuo, Clinical Psychologist, spoke on the importance of mental health, equating it with physical well-being. She also highlighted services available at the OPD, including TELE-MANAS, a tele-mental health initiative.
Dr Ao Yanger, DNO, NTCP, Peren, delivered the keynote on the seminar theme, expressing concern over the rising trend of smokeless chewing tobacco (SLT) among youth, which he said has become a social norm.
He warned that oral cancer cases are increasing not only among the elderly but also in younger adults due to excessive tobacco consumption. He urged participants to avail early treatment and utilise available services.
Neivinuo, Psychologist, NTCP, briefed the gathering on district-level activities undertaken under the programme.
The seminar concluded with a collective pledge to “Say No to Tobacco,” reaffirming commitment to a healthier and tobacco-free society.
