A sensitization training on Pre-Conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994 was conducted for Medical Officers/ Registered Medical Practitioners on March 20 at the Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Hall, Dimapur.
In a press release, office of the Chief Medical Officer, IEC Bureau Section informed that resource person, surgeon at CHC Medziphema, Dr. Botoho, sensitized participants on the objectives of the PC-PNDT Act 1994.
He emphasized that sex selection before and after conception has been prohibited and informed that ultrasound clinics must be staffed by qualified professionals and maintain complete records. Dr. Botoho warned that violations could lead to imprisonment or fines, with doctors facing suspension or removal from the State Medical Council for repeat offences.
He mentioned that while female foeticide was not common in Nagaland, it was crucial for the public and medical practitioners to be aware of and avoid such practices, as they violate the PC-PNDT Act. He also noted that the District Authority registers ultrasound clinics, labs, and counselling centers after assessing them according to the Act’s provisions.
He further sensitized the participants on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012, which protects children under 18 from sexual assault, harassment, and pornography He also outlined the procedures for examining victims and the details to include in reports. The programme was chaired by Dy.Chief Medical Officer Dimapur Dr. Philip Kent, and keynote address by Chief Medical Officer Dimapur, Dr. Temsu Longkumer.
