Shelton beats Fritz for first title on grass in Stuttgart

STUTTGART (GERMANY), JUN 14 (AP): Ben Shelton captured his first grass-court title by defeating defending champion Taylor Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the Stuttgart Open final on Sunday. In an all-American showdown, the 23-year-old Shelton showcased resilience and composure, saving nine of the 11 break points he faced to secure victory. His triumph adds to an impressive season, marking his third title of 2026 after earlier wins in Munich and Dallas.
Shelton’s path to the Stuttgart crown was marked by grit, particularly in the semi-final where he saved two match points against Jiri Lehecka. In the final, he struck early to take the opening set 6-4, but Fritz responded strongly in the second, breaking Shelton twice to level the contest. The decider saw Shelton regain control, holding firm under pressure and capitalizing on key moments to edge Fritz 6-4.
Ranked No. 5 in the world, Shelton has now collected six career titles, underlining his rapid rise on the ATP Tour. His victory also extended his head-to-head dominance over Fritz, having beaten him earlier this year in the Dallas final. For Fritz, the defeat ended his hopes of defending the Stuttgart crown, while Shelton celebrated a breakthrough on grass that strengthens his credentials ahead of the summer season.
