Taking serious note of illegal constructions, encroachments etc. posing hurdles to free flow of drains in Dimapur, advisor of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio on Thursday informed that DC Dimapur has issued show cause notices.
Informing this to Nagaland Post on the sidelines of NLA Select Committee meeting, Zhaleo expressed satisfaction that the DC took decisive action against illegal constructions obstructing drainage systems.
On the issue of unauthorized shops/structures below the railway flyover, Zhaleo said these structures/shops were illegal as there were no records with the Dimapur Municipal Council of having such provisions or making any allotments to individuals.
Since an order has already been issued to remove all such illegal structures, Zhaleo clarified that this was done so in the best interest of the public and not aimed at singling out any individual.
It may be mentioned that the advisor along with DC Dimapur, DMC administrator, police, health department and Urban Development officials carried out extensive inspection of the city’s clogged drainage system and waste disposal in several areas of Dimapur in September last. Zhaleo flagged improper disposal of waste and also lack of civic sense among section of the residents in Dimapur, as factors that have witnessed flash floods in the city.
During the inspection, Zhaleo also observed illegal constructions, encroachments, and standing structures obstructing free flow of drains. He also flagged concern over unauthorized constructions in market areas or converting open spaces into congested market stalls.
He, therefore, called upon district administration to take immediate action, setting clear timeline for removal of illegal structures, adding that identified buildings found to be in violation of regulations to be addressed with empowerment of government forces if required.
