KOHIMA, OCT 13 (NPN): A grassroots enterprise development dialogue on skill development was organised at Oriental College, Kohima, on October 13 as part of a social impact initiative of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), in partnership with Assam Rifles. The programme was sponsored by Oriental College, with the Research and Extension Association for Conservation Horticulture and Agro Forestry (REACHA) as the implementation partner.
Addressing the gathering as special guest, Commandant of 13 Assam Rifles, Col. Manish Sankhyan, said youth and communities were key to development and progress. He encouraged young people to have courage, take up challenges and contribute towards building a better society.
Emphasising the importance of preserving cultural values while embracing positive change, Sankhyan urged the youth to present traditional practices in new and constructive ways. He said the Nagas had a natural gift of hospitality and that Nagaland’s spirit of community engagement was among the best in the country. He also sought the support and collaboration of the Naga community in building a better future, stating that while ideas and projects should come from the community, Assam Rifles had the capabilities and infrastructure to support initiatives aimed at empowering people.
In her opening remarks, Oriental College principal Dr. Watinaro Longkumer said the programme was not merely a dialogue but a conversation about the future of Nagaland. Describing it as a grassroots transformation initiative, she stressed that young people needed not only degrees but also employability skills to succeed in their careers. She thanked SIDBI, REACHA and Assam Rifles for their contributions towards empowering youth and communities.
The programme was chaired by Setuolie Theünuo, while REACHA representative Betonika L. Chishi delivered the context setting address. It also featured a traditional dance performance by students. REACHA representatives Mudit Pant and Chanchi presented details of the organisation and project, while successful trainees shared their experiences. The vote of thanks was delivered by Chanchithung.
