Gangtok, Jul 26 (PTI): Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Sunday inaugurated the newly constructed Rajya Sainik Board Office-cum-Sainik Rest House in Gangtok on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, describing the facility as a symbol of the state government’s gratitude to ex-servicemen and the families of martyrs.
Built with support from the Sikkim government, the complex will function as a dedicated centre for pension, healthcare, education and employment-related services for veterans, besides providing accommodation for ex-servicemen visiting the state capital. Addressing the gathering, Tamang paid homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War and extended greetings to the Indian Armed Forces. He said the courage, sacrifice, discipline and patriotism of the armed forces continue to inspire generations, adding that their commitment to the principle of “Nation First, Self and Family Later” ensures the peace, security and dignity of every Indian.
The chief minister said the Indian Army’s role extends beyond safeguarding the country’s borders, noting that it has consistently come to the aid of citizens during natural disasters and emergencies. He also praised ex-servicemen for continuing to serve society after retirement and urged young people to emulate their discipline, leadership and spirit of selfless service.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to veterans, Tamang highlighted the state’s decision to reserve 20 per cent of vacancies in Sikkim Police Constable and Forest Guard recruitment for Agniveers completing four years of military service. He said the policy recognises the discipline, leadership and skills acquired during their tenure in the armed forces.
The chief minister also announced the allotment of newly constructed commercial shops to 11 beneficiaries from the ex-servicemen community, saying the initiative would strengthen their livelihood and economic security. He assured that the government would continue extending financial assistance, employment opportunities and welfare support to ex-servicemen and their families.
During the programme, Tamang launched the Rajya Sainik Board Digitisation Project, aimed at making services for veterans more efficient and accessible across Sikkim. He also commended the Buildings and Housing Department and Rajya Sainik Board Secretary Colonel Vijay Bansnett (Retd) for successfully executing the project.
Former secretaries and Welfare Organisers of the Rajya Sainik Board were felicitated for their contributions to the welfare of ex-servicemen, while the chief minister was honoured by the Board for the state government’s continued support to the veteran community. The programme was attended by ministers, legislators, senior civil and military officials, serving and retired armed forces personnel, Veer Naris and their families.
