NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (AGENCIES): More than 1.5 crore names have been deleted so far from voter lists during the Election Commission’s ongoing third phase of special intensive revision (SIR). SIR 3.0 is being conducted in 16 States and three Union Territories: Delhi, Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Tripura, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Draft lists have been published for 12 States. Door-to-door verification has been extended in Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra, while draft lists for Tripura and Nagaland are yet to be published.
The 12 States with draft lists had 13,77,27,807 voters, of whom 1,58,59,834 (11.51%) were deleted as absent, shifted or dead, according to EC data. Final figures could change as claims and objections are invited.
Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu recorded the highest deletion rate at 29.64%, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (19.09%), Haryana (16.38%) and Chandigarh (12.8%). Mizoram recorded the lowest at 5.2%.
Andhra Pradesh had the highest number of deletions at 44.89 lakh, followed by Haryana (33.83 lakh) and Odisha (20.12 lakh). Sikkim recorded the lowest at 37,724 (8%), followed by Mizoram at 46,162. Deletions stood at 6.02% in Odisha, 7.5% in Manipur, 10.39% in Uttarakhand, 7.67% in Meghalaya and 16.48% in Jharkhand.
SIR has already been conducted in Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Assam underwent a “special revision” due to NRC-related legalities.
The exercise has drawn Opposition criticism and faced court challenges. In March, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld its constitutional validity.
