SIR vital to keep illegal immigrants off electoral rolls: Meghalaya BJP minister

Shillong, Sep 29: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Sanbor Shullai on Tuesday asserted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is vital to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining voting rights.
Accusing the Congress of ‘spreading lies’ to derail the ongoing SIR process, Shullai said that the Joint Press Note has conclusively proved that Congress and its I.N.D.I. alliance partners have been manufacturing lies to mislead the people of the country to create panic, sensationalism, and deceit.
Urging citizens not to “fall prey to false claims” of the Congress, the veteran BJP leader said that the Congress party “stands thoroughly exposed” in Meghalaya.
“The people of Meghalaya can see that all three Election Commissioners acted with complete, recorded consensus on every major decision. I would like to ask the Congress why it’s only agenda is to spread falsehoods?” Shullai asked.
Highlighting judicial endorsement for the process, Shullai pointed out that the statutory declaration under Form-6 for SIR has been scrutinized and upheld by the Supreme Court.
“Is the Congress and its deceitful partners questioning the highest judicial authority of the land in the name of saving democracy?” he questioned.
He further accused the Congress of targeting constitutional bodies whenever faced with electoral defeats.
“They (Congress) have questioned EVMs whenever they have lost, which is almost always these days. They have questioned defence deals, the defence forces and now even the National Security Advisor. All this continues to set a dangerous trend for our state and I appeal to everyone to not fall prey to such malicious propaganda,” Shullai stated.
Pointing out that the Congress and its allies have been “totally rejected” in Meghalaya, he accused them of trying to “hijack the people’s choice by spreading lies and creating chaos”.
“Every word spoken by the Congress only reeks of dishonesty and an attempt to destabilise society. They must understand that the people of Meghalaya will stand with facts and never with negative agendas and falsehoods,” Shullai stated.
