Situation returns to normalcy in Karbi Anglong districts

CorrespondentDIPHU, DEC 27

Situation in West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam affected by violence has returned to normal following an assurance from chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday regarding government’s decision to move the Gauhati High Court for an early order on its previous stay on the eviction issue in the grazing lands of two districts.
It may be mentioned that West Karbi Anglong saw violence between the indigenous Karbi and the Hindi speaking community, in which two persons lost their lives and at least 70 people, mostly police personnel, suffered injuries earlier this week.
The chief minister on Thursday asserted that the demand by the Karbi people to evict the alleged encroachers from grazing lands cannot be complied right away, as the issue was under judicial consideration of Gauhati High Court. Although the situation has improved to a large extent, internet service has not been restored in most of the areas of the two hill districts while night curfew is still in force.
