In a show of solidarity and civic responsibility, the Students’ Council of St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS), St. Joseph’s College Men’s Hostel (SJCMH), and Jesus Youth SJC(A), undertook a large-scale voluntary drive at the Phesama landslide site on Wednesday.
The programme commenced with a briefing by Students’ Council president Kakito K. Awomi, who outlined the dual purpose of the initiative—rehabilitating the damaged footpath and drawing attention to the persistent road hazards affecting the college and surrounding community. “We want to confront the reality at the grassroots and ensure those responsible understand the sustained impact,” Awomi said, calling for greater institutional accountability.
Following a prayer led by the vice president of the Students’ Council, the voluntary work began at 11a.m. The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) was also present at the site.
Over 410 student volunteers participated in the three-hour drive, clearing debris and carrying out essential repairs to improve pedestrian safety.
In his closing remarks, Awomi expressed gratitude to all participants and voiced hope that the initiative would inspire meaningful action. “I trust that our work will not be in vain,” he said, “and that our voices will reach those in a position to effect lasting change.”
