SJC celebrates World Space Week

As part of the global celebrations of World Space Week, to kindle interest in space technology and to foster spirit of participation in discourse of space science and exploration, Department of Physics, St. John College (SJC), observed week-long celebration from October 4 top 10 through four events.


A press release by SJC stated that on October 4, a joint wall magazine, “Spectra”, by Mathematics and Physics department was launched by vice principal, Dr. Sumita Banik Saha, and its significance of publication was explained by Nukshichila, 3rd year Physics Honours student.


On October 5, “Daily life impact of Space Missions” was discussed by Soumyajit Pramanick, HoD of Physics Department, in form of a presentation. The agenda of the presentation was to emphasize upon how various fields of technology got benefitted through space exploration projects, including miniature electronics, water purification system, digital cameras, virtual reality tools, various detectors, etc. Implications of Earth observation and climate monitoring satellites and their myriad applications were also discussed, along with how satellites have changed communication navigation, and even medical technology.


The release added that an extempore competition was organised on October 9 on the theme of space exploration. The first three positions were secured by Anjali Kumari, Wapangshilu Imsong and Y Chingmei.


The World Space Week celebrations of the department concluded with model presentations by students of the department on October 10. Models of Lunar Base, Chandrayaan 3 lander and rover, and international space station were built, and demonstrated by first, second- and third-year students respectively.
