SJU Chumou hosts national seminar on ‘Tribal Politics’

St. Joseph University’s Department of Political Science and Nagaland University’s Tribal Research Centre hosted a national seminar themed, ‘Tribal Politics in North-East India: Navigating Identity, Autonomy, and Development’.


Dr. Walter Fernandes, director of the North Eastern Social Research Centre in Guwahati, delivered an enlightening keynote address. He delved into the intricate tapestry of tribal politics in Northeast India, shedding light on regional intricacies such as ethnicity, language, and autonomy.


The valedictory session featured Dr. Leban Serto, a member of the Global Campaign for Peace Education and Director of the Centre for Peace Education in Manipur. Dr. Serto urged attendees to harness legal provisions to empower Northeast Indian tribes, advocating for peaceful conflict resolution through education and dialogue.


The seminar, comprised of seven enlightening sessions, showcased 31 paper presentations from 15 esteemed institutions spanning nine states. These presentations delved into a myriad of topics, including governance structures, cultural preservation, conflict resolution, and economic development, providing invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by indigenous communities.


Associate Professors at SJU, Dr. Somingam Mawon and Dr. Shonreiphy Longvah, served as the conveners of the intellectually stimulating event, underscoring the commitment of academia to fostering understanding and progress in tribal politics.
