SJU conducts webinar on animal cell culture

A webinar on “Animal Cell Culture: Basics, applications and modern innovations” was conducted by the department of Botany, St Joseph University on August 28. 

A press release by SJU stated that guest speaker biochemist and Animal Cell Culture Specialist, Athmic Biotech Solutions, Trivandrum, Kerala, India, Dr. Abhilash S explained the importance of cell culture in medical and biological sciences. 
He explained the use of primary and secondary cell lines, processes to obtain cell lines, the importance of sub-culturing, various media and media compositions needed for of cell cultures and different types of assays used (such as MTT assay and apoptosis assay). 
Dr. Abhilash also gave an explanation on the significance of cell culture and its recent innovations in drug discovery, vaccine development, cancer research, hormonal studies, mechanism of drug action, stem cell culture, cosmetic assays, testing the efficiency of Ayurveda and other drugs, production of lab meat, organ development and the importance of medicinal plants in drug discovery. 
The webinar was attended by faculties, research scholars and students from the department of Botany of St Joseph University.
