St. Joseph University celebrated World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on May 26, 2025, with an expert talk organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and the Department of Botany.
The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights in promoting innovation, creativity, and sustainable development.
The inaugural session was led by Mharhoni C. Tsanglao, Student president of the Botany department, followed by an invocation by Ph.D. scholar Moachila.
Dr. K. Kumar welcomed the participants, and IIC Convener Dr. J. Suresh Kumar delivered the keynote speech, emphasizing the significance of IP in today’s economy.
The event featured guest speaker Dr. P. Sivagurunathan from Annamalai University, who explained different types of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications (GIs).
He used local examples like Naga King Chilli and Chakhesang Naga Shawl to highlight the importance of GI protection.
Dr. Sivagurunathan also shared information on patent filing procedures, costs, and commercialization strategies, stressing the need to safeguard innovations. He discussed the role of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) in protecting biological resources and warned against patent scams.
Around sixty participants, including faculty, research scholars, and students, attended the event in person and online. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Renben Z. Jungio and a benediction by Tongtikala Kichu, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany.
