Sangtam Literature Board (SLB) organised a campaign on the theme, “The importance of Mother-Tongue” with the approval from the Department of School Education on April 8 and 11, 2025 at Kiphire Town, Yangli Mission Centre and Tsithrongse Village, Chumoukedima respectively.
The campaign focussed mainly on Nagaland Heritage Studies (NHS) and National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which will be strictly implemented by the next academic year. In this regard, SLB called for strengthening the SMC/SMDCs and Language teacher-designates to prioritise teaching mother tongue in their respective schools so as to foster a strong foundation that would empower students and strengthen their connection to roots and heritage through learning in schools.
However, SLB said there were shortages of textbooks in many Government Schools which was hindering the purpose of teaching and learning. In this regard, the SLB has requested the School Education department to look into the matter. Another issue, SLB highlighted was the shortage or non-availability of language teachers in the schools.
SLB felt that language teachers should be appointed on priority basis without which the agenda of pushing forward the various education policies becomes far-fetched.
Meanwhile, SLB thanked the USSC and its federating units, school authorities, Hd.GB’s, and Village Council chairmen of all the villages under Sangtam areas for their support in taking forward the agenda of prioritising mother tongue teaching in schools.
