The opening fixtures of Season 3 of the SML cricket tournament produced thrilling encounters, with Kohima Old Boys, Esa Warriors and Lhomithi securing victories in their respective matches played on January 24 and 25.
Kohima Old Boys vs Chumou Veterans
On January 24, Chumou Veterans won the toss and opted to field, but Kohima Old Boys capitalized on the opportunity to post 145/6 in 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Suneper, who struck a superb 79 runs, while Khriesamhalie added a valuable 35.
In reply, Chumou Veterans fought hard but were restricted to 124/8, with their top order—Visakolie, Nsamyibe and Alongba Toshi unable to keep pace with the rising required rate. A disciplined bowling effort sealed the win for Kohima Old Boys. For his all-round contribution of 79 runs and one wicket, Suneper was named Man of the Match.
Esa Warriors vs Kohima Legends
On Sunday, in the second match, Kohima Legends elected to bat first but were limited to 132/8 in 20 overs, undone by a relentless Esa Warriors bowling attack. Rakesh (2 wickets), Alongba Pongen (3 wickets), and Michael (3 wickets) kept constant pressure and broke partnerships at crucial junctures.
Esa Warriors’ chase was far from smooth, as their top order collapsed early. However, the middle order steadied the innings, and the contest went down to the final over. With just two balls remaining, Sentongkaba scooped a boundary to seal a dramatic 133/7 win. Alongba Pongen’s impactful all-round performance—41 runs and three wickets—earned him the Man of the Match award.
Lhomithi vs Nzon CC
The third match saw Lhomithi win the toss and bat first, racing to an imposing 190/3 in 20 overs. Enam Uddin (53), Hino Chishi (65), Wapang Zong (33) and Hamrung Langthasa (20) all contributed significantly to the total.
Nzon CC struggled in response, restricted to 116/9 against a disciplined Lhomithi attack. Despite efforts from Shiyeto Wotsa (25), Keibueding Nsarangbe (27) and skipper Kenendi Apong (27), the chase faltered under scoreboard pressure. Hino Chishi capped off a fine all-round display with 65 runs and three wickets, earning him the Man of the Match award.
