World Asthma Day – First Tuesday of May. First marked in 1998, 2024’ theme is “Asthma Education Empowers”. The idea is to increase awareness about Asthma and educate people about it.
World Laughter Day – First Sunday of May. The first celebration took place on 10th January 1998, in Mumbai, India. The idea is to build a healthy and peaceful relationship through laughter. This year’s theme is “Unity Through Laughter”.
May 1 – International Workers Day. Marked since 1889 which celebrate the contribution of laborers and the working class to society.
May 3 – Press Freedom Day. The United Nations General Assembly made this day official in 1993. a declaration stating press freedom principles, promote freedom of press and journalism under the Freedom of Speech right. This year’s theme is titled A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the environmental crisis
May 4- International Firefighters Day. Marked since 1999 to honor firefighters for safeguarding the environment and communities.
May 7 – World Athletics Day. This day is to encourage youngsters to practice athletics since 1996.
May 8- World Red Cross Day. First marked in 1948, 2024 theme is based on “I give with joy, and the joy I give is a reward.”
Second Sunday of May – Mother’s Day. The celebration takes place worldwide in May since 1908. The idea is to respect motherhood and maternal bonds.
May 12 – International Nurses Day. This day honors Florence Nightingale’s exceptional role as a nurse in the medical field. It is to highlight the contribution that nurses make, theme for 2024 is “Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care”.
May 15 – International Day of Families. The UN General Assembly made this day official in 1993, promoting a healthy and balanced family.
May 17 – World Telecommunication and Information Society. First recognized in 2006, it is to explore the Internet and other communication technologies.
May 17 – World Hypertension Day. Hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure goes up at an increasing rate.
This can risk the heart, kidney, brain, and other organs as well. This day aims to make people aware of this condition since 2005.
May 18 – World AIDS Vaccine Day. The first celebration took place in 1998 inspired by Clinton’s speech with motive to raise awareness about AIDS and promote research for its vaccine. There has yet to be vaccine yet.
May 21 – World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The idea is to promote diversity-related issues. The United Nations General Assembly made this day official in 2001.
May 21 – National Anti-Terrorism Day United Against Terror. 2024 theme is “Building a Secure and Inclusive Future”, marked officially first in 1998. This became amplified after the assassination of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, calling the need for national unity and vigilance against terrorism.
May 28- International Day of Action for Women’s Health . The first celebration took place in 1987 . This day is observed to raise awareness about the health of Women and well beings such as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The main focus is to remind the general public, government staff, and officers about the health of women.
May 29 – International Mount Everest Day. The first summit on MT. Everest took place on May 29, 1953, by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. Nepal took the initiative to celebrate this day in 2008 after Hillary’s death. This day is to celebrate the achievement of climbing Everest.
May 31 – Anti-Tobacco Day. The main aim is to raise awareness about the negative effects of tobacco first marked in 1988.
