Shillong, Jul 30: Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of murdering her newlywed husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025, surrendered at a Shillong sessions court following the Supreme Court’s order setting aside her bail, official said on Wednesday.
“She (Sonam) surrendered before the sessions court on Tuesday,”. Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said. On July 23, a division bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale set aside the June 29 order of Meghalaya High Court, which had upheld the trial court’s decision granting bail to Sonam, citing procedural lapses during her arrest.
The Meghalaya government had filed an appeal in Supreme Court after the Meghalaya High Court upheld the trial court’s order.
The apex court stated that if the trial is not concluded within six months, Sonam would be at liberty to file a fresh bail application in accordance with the law.
The Indore-based transport businessman, Raja Raghuvanshi, was allegedly murdered at the behest of his newly married wife, Sonam, during their honeymoon trip to Sohra (a popular tourist destination in Meghalaya) in May 2025.
He was allegedly killed by three men from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Meghalaya Police found Raja’s decomposed body in a deep gorge below the Wei Sawdong Falls parking lot at Riat Arliang, under the Sohra Civil Sub-Division of the East Khasi Hills district, on June 2, 2025.
Sonam and four other co-accused—including her alleged paramour Raj Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan—were arrested on June 9, 2025, from different locations across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
The Meghalaya Police filed a 790-page charge-sheet against the accused before the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Sohra, framing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
