Activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday after the Centre revoked his detention under the National Security Act. Wangchuk, 59, had been detained on September 26 last year on orders of the Leh district magistrate following protests during an agitation led by the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance seeking statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule.
Police said he was released around 1.30 pm after the government revoked the detention “with immediate effect”. The Centre said the move aimed to foster peace and facilitate dialogue with stakeholders through the high-powered committee mechanism. LAB and KDA termed the release a “big victory”, while Wangchuk reiterated his commitment to Ladakh’s protection and future through dialogue.
