Sovima sanitation committee lauded

Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) member secretary, K. Hukato Chishi has lauded the sanitation committee of Sovima village for effective management of waste within the village.
Hukato said such initiatives taken up at the grassroots level by the committee, can uplift the village to become a model village.
He was speaking at the workshop -cum-training session on Waste Management and Ban on Single-Use Plastic held on July 25 at the Council Hall, Sovima Village.
The event was organized by the Tribal Welfare Society in collaboration with the Nagaland Pollution Control Board.
Hukato said the success of the committee initiative will also encourage other villages to adopt the same method.
The member secretary also emphasized that waste management can be overcomed if everyone follow the right way of disposing it and stop using single-use plastic bags, while also making necessary changes in the lifestyle. He highlighted the adverse impacts of littered single-use plastic items on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including marine environments.
He further stressed the need to raise awareness among others and emphasized that the success of the ban on single-use plastic will only be possible through effective engagement and concerted actions by all stakeholders, along with enthusiastic public participation, as envisioned by the Ministry.
During the welcome address, SVC chairman, Sebastian Zumvü spoke on the theme “Grow Tree, Plant Tree” and shared that they planted a thousand trees last year and also imposed a ban on hunting, resulting in improvements in the village.
He appealed to the department to provide further guidance on waste management and ban on single-use plastic.
Zumvü also urged the government to adopt Sovima village as a model village.
Meanwhile, a power point presentation on the topic “Ban on SUP” was presented by NPCB environmental engineer Er Aghali A Swu, topic on “Solid waste management” and “Compositing, 3R’s” was presented by NPCB scientist ‘B’ Yanathung Kithan and NPCB scientist ‘B’Akangmeren Imchen.
The programme was followed by interactive session.
