Special convoy for petroleum tankers depart for Manipur

CorrespondentIMPHAL, Aug 30

To cope with acute shortage of petroleum products, including LPG ,which Manipur is likely to face, authorities have arranged a special convoy exclusively to enhance the shipping of these products.
An official source said that a special convoy exclusively for bringing in petroleum fuel and LPG has been arranged and the same implemented with effect from Saturday.
The stocks of petroleum fuel and LPG have been fast depleting in the state due to drastic fall in transport of these products on account of transit bottlenecks arising from frequent landslides on both NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur) and NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam), the two crucial lifelines for the state, officials said.
For the time being, there is no disturbance in the normal supply of petroleum fuels to the consumers at the retail outlets despite drastic stock depletion. However, LPG distributors are currently unable to meet the demand of household consumers with a massive backlog of three months.
Noting the acute imminent shortage of petroleum products, Governor Ajay Kumar Balla reviewed the stock position of petroleum products (petrol, diesel, ATF and LPG) in the state on Friday, the officials said.
“To replenish the stock and ensure adequate availability of fuel for the state’s domestic and commercial requirements, it was decided that the state CAF&PD department, in close coordination with state police and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, will arrange a special convoy exclusively for bringing in petroleum fuel and LPG,” the official said.
The special convoy will escort exclusively 158 petrol and diesel tanker trucks, five ATF (aeroplane fuel) and 29 LPG tanker trucks, the source said. The said trucks have already left Jiribam for Imphal today early this morning and are expected to reach Imphal within the next two to three days, the source added.
“The state government assures that it will take all necessary measures to meet all fuel requirements for the people of the state,” the official asserted.
