The sweeping victory of the BJP-led NDA in the Bihar Assembly elections has triggered intense speculation in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are due in 2027. The results have boosted the BJP’s morale while prompting strategic recalculations within the opposition, especially the INDIA bloc.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sharp remarks calling the Congress “Muslim League” and a “Maoist” party, along with his prediction of an impending split, have intensified the debate. Political observers say his comments aim to shape the narrative well ahead of 2027.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav reacted strongly to the Bihar verdict, calling the BJP “a fraud”, but admitted that opposition parties still have lessons to learn from the BJP’s organisational discipline. UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya signalled confidence, declaring “After Magadh, now Awadh”, suggesting the BJP sees Bihar as a precursor to a big win in UP.
The Congress, which revived marginally in UP through its 2024 alliance with the SP, is now cautious about the future of the bloc. UP Congress chief Ajay Rai dismissed PM Modi’s prediction of a split, saying the party knew its internal affairs best.
A key question now confronting the opposition is whether the SP-Congress partnership—which delivered 43 Lok Sabha seats in 2024—can survive till 2027. Their alliance famously collapsed after the 2017 Assembly debacle, a memory still fresh in political circles. Though both parties claim unity, analysts say the Bihar result has complicated the opposition’s momentum, overshadowing even their planned campaign on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary rejected suggestions of a setback, asserting that the INDIA bloc remained strong and that the SP would form the next government under Akhilesh Yadav. He said the party would study the Bihar verdict and stay vigilant regarding the SIR process.
However, the Bihar mandate has shifted political mood. Maurya declared, “We will repeat 2017 in 2027,” referring to the BJP’s historic 325-seat win. Analysts say the NDA’s cohesion in Bihar, especially retaining Nitish Kumar, may push UP allies- Apna Dal (S), SBSP, NISHAD and RLD—to remain firmly with the BJP. Some also predict emerging strains within the INDIA bloc after the Bihar results.
Congress leader Ajay Rai said it was still “too early to comment” and the party would review the situation in detail.
