KOHIMA, JUL 6 (NPN): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland on Monday commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the party headquarters in Kohima, where Deputy chief minister and BJP Legislature Party leader, Yanthungo Patton, paid tribute to the late leader’s enduring contributions to education, industry, democratic values and nation building.
Addressing the programme as special guest, Patton described it as a privilege to honour a leader whose life was defined by service, courage and deep love for India. He said Dr. Mookerjee firmly believed that the strength of a nation began with the strength of its people, and regarded education, discipline and character as the true foundations of progress.
Highlighting his contribution to education, Patton recalled that as one of the youngest Vice Chancellors of Calcutta University, Dr. Mookerjee introduced progressive ideas that promoted Indian languages and culture alongside modern education. He also encouraged scientific research, skill development and greater opportunities for youth, believing education should instil confidence and prepare responsible citizens for national service.
Patton further noted Dr. Mookerjee’s role as independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, where he laid the foundation for industrial development in the country. He said Mookerjee’s vision of economic growth was rooted in benefiting the entire nation, with institutions established during his tenure continuing to contribute to India’s progress.
Referring to his public life, Patton said Dr. Mookerjee exemplified honesty and principled leadership, consistently placing national interest above personal considerations. He also highlighted his founding of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into the BJP, and said his ideals of service, good governance and national development continue to guide the party.
Emphasising his vision of national unity, Patton said Dr. Mookerjee believed India’s strength lay in its diversity, with unity built on equal respect, opportunities and shared commitment. He urged citizens, particularly youth, to draw inspiration from his legacy, uphold integrity, respect democratic institutions and contribute to nation building. The programme was chaired by BJP State Mahila Morcha vice president Kashini Kiba. Invocation was pronounced by Francis P. Kiewhuo, catechist of St. Francis de Sales Church, Kohima Town, while the welcome address was delivered by BJP Nagaland state secretary Therali Ezung.
A brief history of Dr. Mookerjee was presented by Thomas Magh, convenor of the celebration and BJP ST Morcha state president, while Adv. Chitho Nyusou, BJP state spokesperson, spoke on his social and political life. The event also featured a special folk fusion performance by Vekuyole Tase, treasurer of BJP State ST Morcha, and concluded with a vote of thanks by BJP Kohima district president Khrielie Üsou.
