State consultation reviews Money Lenders Act 2005

DIMAPUR: As mandated by the National Commission for Women (NCW), the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, Government of Nagaland and other stakeholders, organised a state level consultation on the Nagaland Money Lenders Act 2005 at the SIRD Conference Hall, Kohima, on July 17, 2026.
The consultation was conducted to undertake a gender sensitive review of the Act, ensuring strict monitoring and enforcement so that registered money lenders adhere to prescribed guidelines and ethical practices. It also aimed to identify, regulate and penalise unregistered private money lenders and agencies operating outside the legal framework, while drafting robust amendments to safeguard citizens. The goal, organisers said, is to foster an environment where credit acts as an economic ladder rather than a financial trap.
The initiative seeks to strengthen accountability, promote fair and transparent lending practices, and safeguard the dignity, rights and economic security of citizens-particularly women across the state.
During the technical session, Neiko Akami, Member Secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), spoke on “Legal Gaps,” followed by Dr. Riku Khutso on “Implementation Challenges.” Kekhriengulie, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Department of Law & Justice, deliberated on “Co ordinations,” while Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichü, advisor, Naga Mothers’ Association, spoke on “Relevance to Women’s Rights, frequent complaints- Reforms.”
