DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): The State government has released Rs. 70 lakh under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for immediate relief to families affected by the devastating landslides and flash floods that struck Mon district on July 19 and 20.
In a statement, deputy commissioner and chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority Mon, Wennyei Konyak, said the amount would be utilised towards ex-gratia assistance to the next of kin of the deceased, gratuitous relief for the injured, and immediate assistance for houses damaged by landslides and flash floods. DC also informed that chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, during his visit to the affected areas on July 20, had extended Rs. 10 lakh for civil society organisations, the District Hospital and local volunteers assisting the government in search and rescue operations.
The disaster claimed nine lives, injured several others and caused extensive damage to houses, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure across the district.
DC conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and assured that the district administration stood firmly with every affected family.
He said the district administration, in coordination with Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, district police, SDRF, 42 Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, line departments, village and ward councils, Konyak Union, KNSK, KSU and local volunteers, continued search and rescue operations, damage assessment, relief distribution and restoration of essential services.
DC also acknowledged the efforts of all departments, security forces, volunteers and local communities for their prompt response and dedication during the emergency.
In view of the continuing monsoon, the district administration advised the public to remain vigilant, avoid landslide-prone areas, overflowing rivers and vulnerable roads, and strictly follow weather advisories and official instructions. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring timely relief, rehabilitation and restoration for all affected communities.
