The two-week-long State Handloom Expo 2025 (Hathkargha Mela) under the Aatmnirbhar Bharat Utsav commenced on July 8 at the Gorkha Public Panchayat Hall, Chandmari, Kohima. The expo is organized by Nagaland Apex Weavers & Artisans Cooperative Federation (WEAFED) Ltd., Dimapur, and sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and held under the theme “My Handloom, My Pride,” the event will run till July 21.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, WEAFED Ltd., managing director, Gwaruno Khing, urged participants to uphold high product quality.
He highlighted the Central Government’s push to promote local products globally and encouraged artisans to take advantage of such opportunities through better branding and market awareness.
Khing informed that the expo’s main objective was to offer a platform for weavers and artisans to showcase, sell, and reach broader markets. He added that the event envisions a vibrant, sustainable handloom sector that supports long-term employment and self-reliance within the artisan community.
He further emphasized that the expo aims to promote the overall development and welfare of handloom weavers by facilitating access to upgraded looms, accessories, and subsidized yarn in cluster areas.
He also assured that the department remains committed to providing full support to weavers and artisans, including skill enhancement and provision of machinery.
A total of 60 weavers and artisans from Nagaland and Assam are participating in the expo.
