KOHIMA, SEP 28 (NPN): A two week State Handloom Expo (Hathkargha Mela) under the theme “My Handloom, My Pride” was inaugurated at Gorkha Public Panchayat Hall, Upper Chandmari, Kohima, on September 28. The event was organised by the Nagaland Apex Weavers & Artisans Cooperative Federation Ltd. Dimapur (WEAFED) and sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi.
The expo was inaugurated by Orenthung Lotha, Commissioner and Secretary for Cooperation and Information & Public Relations. Addressing the gathering, Lotha commended the contribution of artisans towards boosting the economy. He noted that the Northeast was renowned for its rich textile heritage, with each tribe weaving its identity and stories into the loom.
He said the expo seeks to provide a platform for weavers, artisans and self help groups (SHGs) to showcase authentic handloom products and traditional attire while connecting them with wider markets. Lotha also encouraged artisans to refine traditional designs to make them more commercially viable and prosper through entrepreneurial activities.
WEAFED managing director Gwaruno Khing informed that the expo comprises 60 stalls, including 40 set up by local artisans from Nagaland and 20 featuring artisans from Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and other mainland states.
The expo will continue till October 12 and remain open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Products on display include shawls, mekhelas, traditional bags, toys and necklaces, available at reasonable prices.
Assistant Registrar, Cooperative Societies Asosala and Joint Registrar, Cooperative Societies Rokovisa Chase also attended the programme.
The expo aims to provide a platform for artisans to showcase and sell their products, promote the handloom and handicraft sector, and foster business opportunities within the industry.
