State lagging in industrial sector due to unresolved Naga political issue: CM

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio lamented that despite Nagas having a distinct identity in terms of food, traditions and culture, the unresolved Naga political issue had led to the state lagging behind others in industrial sector.


Rio said this while inaugurating the First Jhum Fair-cum-Chiecha Licha (Food Fair) organized by the Chiechamiapfü Mechü Krotho (Chiechamia women organisation) at Amphitheatre, Chiechama village here on Wednesday.


Rio expressed happiness to learn that some families from Chiechama village were earning more than Rs.1 lakh by commercialising their produce. He lauded the women for their hard work and making the festival possible. He said when there was competition and prizes, it seemed to be more productive and encouraged to observe the competitive spirit.


Expressing his admiration for Chiecha women, Rio said their initiatives have been a source of motivation for everyone. He expressed hope that their efforts would inspire neighbouring villages to adopt similar practices.
On the occasion, the chief minister stressed the importance of documenting the rich food habits and cuisines of the region.


Rio said culture, traditions, and food habits evolve with modern civilization and therefore, it was essential to preserve and highlight Naga traditional culinary practices.
While highlighting the importance of consuming organic produce on health, he also commended the womenfolk for their efforts in promoting organic farming. He urged everyone to continue promoting local produce and cuisines.


Rio also noted that there are some locally made products available under the label “Made in Na-galand” but their commercialization was still limited.
He pointed out that Nagaland was blessed with favourable climatic conditions and fertile land, that made it suitable for the cultivation of various crops.


The chief minister noted that Nagas have become knowledgeable about selling their produce and sustaining themselves economically through different agricultural products.
The chief minister expressed appreciation for the organisers for putting emphasis on millets at the fair which came at a time when the United Nations recognised 2023 as International Year of Millets.


Rio said the situation during COVID-19 pandemic reminded people of the importance of farming and therefore, encouraged people to continue practicing farming. He expressed hope that the association responsible for the festival would continue to keep it alive while assuring to pro-vide support in any way possible.
The chief minister also disclosed that a budget allocation of Rs.40 lakh each was earmarked for the construction of farmers market at Chiechama, Rusoma, Zadima, and Botsa.


He said the investment demonstrated the government’s commitment to promoting agricultural activities and providing better infrastructure for farmers and vendors.
The chief minister was accompanied by a host of dignitaries including ministers, advisors, MLAs and other government officials.


Organizing committee member Helen Rio explained that the purpose of the fair which was to celebrate and promote the agricultural products of Chiechema village. She said the fair aimed at supporting and uplifting the local farmers by showcasing and selling their organic products.


Among the well known agricultural products of the village include- Chiechema chillies, bananas, local onions, pumpkin, cucumbers, and tree tomatoes. She said the products have a unique and distinct taste that is preferred by the people, as they are cultivated specifically in the area.


Helen also cited reports about the produce from local farmers, some of them were supplier of organic vegetables to the Kohima and Dimapur markets. She said the farmers have achieved success in their agricultural endeavours and earned around Rs. 1 lakh – Rs. 2 lakh per annum.


The fair showcased a wide variety of organic produce, including the unique GI tagged tree tomato, spices, fruits, pickles, and handicrafts. Earlier, CMK president Neikuonuo Rüpreo delivered welcome address; Chiechama Basa Baptist Church (CBBC) youth presented a special song while Rev. Soneiu Metha offered invocation.
