DIMAPUR, OCT 5 (NPN): The State-Level Kohima Half Marathon, organized under the theme “SPANDAN – Sports for Peace and Development Across Nations,” concluded at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on Sunday. The mega sporting event was jointly organized by the 78 Battalion, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sechü-Zubza, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Government of Nagaland.
The event witnessed overwhelming participation, with more than 3,000 runners from across Nagaland, including Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Mokokchung, Wokha, Kiphire and Mon districts. The marathon aimed to promote peace, physical fitness, national integration and social harmony through sports.
Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Col Joseph of the 17 Assam Rifles and other dignitaries were also present.
Addressing the participants, Sharma emphasized that the marathon symbolized more than athletic competition, describing it as a movement toward a healthier, progressive and drug-free society. He encouraged the youth to embrace sports as a pathway to health, purpose and national integration, urging citizens to support efforts that promote peace and collective harmony.
During the closing ceremony, a total of 60 cash prizes worth Rs. 6.30 lakh were distributed among the winners. Awards were equally divided between male and female participants up to the 10th position in each age category, reflecting the event’s commitment to gender inclusivity.
In the 18 to below 30 years category, Shiangjiu and Songmo P. emerged as champions. Elanthung and Chongsop P. secured second place, while Temjensanem and Tsumian P. finished third.
In the 30 to below 45 years category, Jonathan and Cekrotalu claimed the top honours, followed by Yezenthunz and Sentinaro in second place, and Banglo Konyak and Tiapenla Amer in third.
In the above 45 years category, N. Pichong and T. Roslyn Lotha took first place, while Shipemo and Vilhousieno finished second and W.R. Joseph and Mezo Nenio secured third position.
Speaking at the event, Commandant of 78 Bn CRPF, Deven Bhosle, expressed gratitude to the Nagaland Government, district administrations and local communities for their support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the marathon. Dignitaries praised the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the participants and described the success of SPANDAN as a significant step toward building a healthier, peaceful and progressive Nagaland.
