State-level orientation held for PLVs

DIMAPUR

A one-day state-level orientation programme for Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) was organised by Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) on June 20 at Japfü Hotel, Kohima.
Registrar of Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, Ajongba Imchen, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the importance of PLVs in ensuring access to justice for the poor and marginalized, as mandated under Article 39(A) of the Constitution. He said PLVs are critical agents of justice and their role goes beyond voluntary service.
Imchen also mentioned the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which empowers member secretaries to appoint PLVs in every district. He urged PLVs to become the most resourceful persons in their areas and to actively help people access their legal rights.
Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsel, Kohima, Kezhosano Kikhi, spoke on the role and responsibilities of PLVs, while Retainer Lawyer, Sunjib Rana, highlighted professional ethics, record keeping, and reporting requirements.
The programme was chaired by NSLSA panel lawyer, Cherry Ovung, with welcome address by member secretary, Neiko Akami, NJS. Over 50 PLVs from various District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) attended the event.
