National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland unit has raised concerns over the critical infrastructure challenges facing the Nagaland Police Department, including the Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) and Indian Reserve (IR) battalions, and called for immediate restoration and modernization.
NPP said that despite serving under demanding and often hazardous conditions to maintain law and order across the State, police personnel continue to operate in facilities that are outdated, inadequate, and in urgent need of repair and modernization.
NPP said that the state of police infrastructure directly impacts the welfare, morale, and efficiency of personnel.
Inadequate or poorly maintained facilities, including accommodation, training grounds, administrative offices, and messes, not only affect the comfort of the forces but also compromise their operational readiness and effectiveness, it said, adding that in the context of today’s rapidly evolving security challenges, well-equipped and properly maintained infrastructure was essential for a professional and responsive police department.
According to the NPP, modern policing required continuous training, skill development, and physical preparedness.
However, it said many training facilities were outdated, insufficient, and lack essential equipment. Classrooms, physical training grounds, and tactical areas were often inadequate, limiting the police’s capacity to respond effectively to emergencies, law and order situations, and community needs, it said.
The party also highlighted mess and ration challenges, noting that several units face problems in ration supply and kitchen facilities, which directly impacts personnel health and welfare. Well-maintained mess facilities with consistent access to quality rations are critical for sustaining morale and operational efficiency.
NPP cautioned that these infrastructure deficiencies lead to reduced morale and motivation, lower operational readiness, difficulty in retaining trained personnel, and compromised public safety, as the effectiveness of law enforcement is closely tied to the welfare and preparedness of the personnel.
NPP urged the state government to prioritize comprehensive infrastructure restoration and modernization in the Police department.
NPP also suggested key recommendations which include conducting a thorough audit of police facilities, ensuring adequate funding with accountability, timely execution of projects, upgrading facilities with modern technology, and improving welfare provisions, including accommodation and mess facilities.
“Infrastructure restoration and modernization is not merely a matter of convenience but essential for maintaining law and order, public safety, and operational efficiency,” NPP stated, calling for immediate action to empower police personnel to serve effectively and provide facilities and environment they deserve.
NPP urged the state government to treat this issue as a top priority, taking prompt and decisive measures to upgrade infrastructure, enhance personnel welfare, and modernize facilities. The party said that by doing so, Nagaland can ensure a professional, motivated, and well-equipped police force capable of meeting present and future challenges while safeguarding both its personnel and the people of the State.
