Correspondent

Nagaland deputy chief minister, Y Patton, who is also in-charge of home portfolio, said Nagaland police since its inception has today evolved into a professional and capable force committed to upholding law and order and serving the people since the men and women in uniform remained committed to maintaining law and order and pursuing justice.

Patton said this after virtually commissioning the Gas Chromatography Mass spectrometry (GCMS) instrument at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Dimapur and flagging off the Nagaland police outreach and civic action programme-cum-beat patrolling during a programme at PHQ here Monday.

Patton apart from performing their normal duties, the state police has also gone beyond their core duties to connect with the people and serve local communities keeping in mind that building a strong community relationship was an integral part to social harmony and national progress.

The deputy CM expressed happiness at the launch of the police outreach program-cum-civic action plan, which was aimed at building a positive police-public partnership based on mutual trust and co-operation to maintain a peaceful environment in the state.
Patton pointed out that the mobile canteen contingents would also function as beat patrol parties to extend better policing to rural and otherwise less-policed areas to help instil a sense of security among people and keep a vigil on anti-social elements in the rural areas, which would be achieved through the involvement of DEFs, NAP, and IRB units of Nagaland Police.

Describing the commissioning of GCMS instrument at FSL Dimapur as a “milestone” , Patton expressed hope that it would significantly bolster forensic investigation capabilities at the same time aid the police force and the judiciary enormously in gathering irrefutable evidence, delivering justice in time and containing the drug menace.

“As Nagaland moves forward on its developmental journey, there will be tests of our resilience when tensions seem to divide communities. However, we must uphold our shared hopes for a just, inclusive, and non-violent society,” Patton said.
He said police has a vital role as both protector and trusted partner for all citizens and so must act with courage, integrity and compassion while citizens too must respond with wisdom, empathy and goodwill.

Patton also congratulated the police department for coming up with more innovative initiatives towards better policing and hoped that the rank and file continued success in their efforts.
He called upon the department to move ahead unitedly to build a vibrant Nagaland that was equitable, harmonious, and progressive.
Patton also thanked the chief minister for allocating sufficient fund to set up the lab.

In a short speech, DGP Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, said the newly commissioned FSL would spruce up the state’s war against drugs.
Sharma pointed out that Nagaland had been facing problems especially since it had to wait in the long queue for the results of forensic samples sent to other states thereby hampering the investigation process.
Sharma pointed out that with the new FSL now in place, the department would be able to get forensic reports within 3 hours.
He said in the next three months the police department would conduct tests on the forensic evidence of all the pending cases over the past year.

After all those cases are resolved, he said the force would be able to conduct daily tests in any new case.
DGP also expressed gratitude to the chief minister and deputy chief minister for handling the setting up of the lab on priority basis.
Sharma also said with the new mobile canteen, Nagaland police was hopeful of providing products to people in rural areas for as low as 25% cheaper than market price.

He informed that some policing activities would also be incorporated alongside the mobile canteens, which would be able to deter criminal activities. In a short speech, FSL Dimapur joint director, Vilhousie Peseyie, said the newly commissioned laboratory was fully equipped to quickly detect all types of narcotics including formerly unidentified drugs.
He requested the deputy chief minister and DGP to look into some issues for the smooth functioning of the lab including manpower, air conditioning and uninterrupted power supply.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by IGP, (ABns-IR/NPTO) Jasbir Singh, while vote of thanks was proposed by Addl DGP (Adm), Renchamo P Kikon. Other dignitaries present at the programme included minister for housing & mechanical engineering P Bashangmongba Chang, adviser for prison and printing & stationery Er Kropol Vitsu, adviser for fishery & aquatic resources A Pangjung Jamir and adviser for fire & emergency services, home guard & civil defence, S Kiusumew Yimchunger.
