State Police issue advisory on social media misinformation

Following terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam and subsequent developments, the Nagaland police have cautioned the people to not believe anything that they come across on social media without proper verification and due diligence.

A press release from PHQ stated that “inimical and anti-national forces” would use all tactics to encourage and spread misinformation and false propaganda to disturb peace and law and order in the country and also in Nagaland.

Police cautioned that one of the easiest ways to spread misinformation was use of social media creating false narratives by use of available tools including AI. Police informed that a lot of the posts on social media platforms originate from handles run from Pakistan or their agents. Police said subsequently such posts were even downloaded and shared by innocent public.

Further, police said there was apprehension that in times to come, many newly created accounts /handles would emerge on social media to spread and propagate emotional and anti national sentiments within the people at large and create disaffection among communities.

Therefore, police alerted all the citizens not to believe anything that they come across on social media without proper verification and due diligence.

Police also requested people not to circulate or share any such content, which had the potential to disturb the peaceable atmosphere in the State. “Such actions are not only bad for the Society but also Criminal offences punishable by Law,” police warned.
