The week-long total lockdown, to contain the spread of coronavirus, came into effect from 6 p.m. on Friday and will remain in effect till May 21.

It may be recalled that High Powered Committee on Covid-19 decided to impose a State-wide total lockdown for a period of seven days following a surge of Covid positive cases in the State.

In Dimapur and across several districts, the government has deployed police personnel at strategic locations to enforce the lockdown throughout the State. Strict measures have been placed at the main entry-exit points of Dimapur.

Further, village and colony authorities have also pledged to assist the district administrations in ensuring strict compliance of the lockdown.

Besides those under exempted category, all activities and movement of people will remain suspended.

However, shops dealing in essential commodities such as grocery and bakery items, vegetables, fish, meat, milk and animal feed etc. have been allowed to remain open from 6 a.m. to 12 noon.

In the state capital , shops will operate only on May 17, 19 and 21. The deputy commissioner Kohima on Friday informed that wholesalers in BOC, Supermarket and High School Area have been permitted to open from 6 a.m. to 12 noon in order to maintain the supply chain to the shops in the colonies/wards and the villages.

Officials said strict checking would be conducted and those violating the lockdown orders would be punished under section 188 of India Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005.

In Mon town, most of the shops downed shutters early as only police personnel were seen patrolling the streets.
