Statement on the installation of fire extinguisher

I would like to stress the need for a balanced and practical approach in enforcing compliance measures on business establishments in Dimapur. While I fully acknowledge and support the importance of fire safety, I must also highlight that equal attention should be given to the pressing civic issues that directly affect the lives of both traders and the public who depend on the market every single day.
The safety of business establishments cannot be compromised under any circumstances, and it is crucial that every unit is properly equipped with functional fire extinguishers. This is not only a legal requirement but also a moral responsibility to safeguard lives and property.
At the same time, it is equally important to recognize that safety is not limited to fire prevention alone. Basic necessities such as proper sanitation facilities, a well-maintained drainage system, and good road conditions in and around the market are fundamental to public welfare.
Without these, traders and the public continue to face difficulties such as waterlogging, poor hygiene, traffic congestion, and unsafe pathways that endanger daily business activities.
I must also point out that business establishments in Dimapur are already burdened with multiple checks and compliances, including taxation and other regulatory requirements.
While we accept the responsibility of complying with safety norms, it is only fair that the authorities also shoulder their responsibility by ensuring that civic amenities are not neglected.
A healthy business environment is built not only on rules and penalties but also on support, infrastructure, and cooperation.
Therefore, I sincerely appeal to the concerned authorities, particularly the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and allied agencies, to adopt a more balanced approach. While enforcing safety norms such as the mandatory installation of fire extinguishers, equal priority must be given to improving civic amenities, repairing and maintaining roads in the market, and addressing drainage and sanitation problems. These issues are not secondary but central to the overall well-being of the business community and the public.
It may be mentioned that the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has recently announced that its enforcement team will be conducting mandatory checks on fire extinguishers in all shops and business establishments under its jurisdiction, warning that penalties will be imposed on those without functional equipment.
While we welcome such measures in the interest of safety, I once again urge that the same seriousness and urgency be extended to the upkeep of civic infrastructure. Only then can we create a safe, healthy, and enabling environment for business and public life in Dimapur.
