Shillong, Jul 20: Students and people from all walks of life gathered at Don Bosco Square here in Meghalaya on Monday to participate in a peaceful protest expressing solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Protesters, consisting largely of students, shouted anti-government slogans and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over widespread exam irregularities and paper leaks in the NEET-UG medical entrance examinations. “India deserves a government that champions its students. Our future belongs to us, not to politicians who refuse to take responsibility for their failures,” one of the student protestors remarked.
Protesters held placards with slogans such as: “Students died because the system failed them”, “Our dreams are not for sale,” “Justice for students who died due to paper leaks,” “India failed its future”, “Sonam Wangchuk the one who stand for us. Let us stand together with him” and “We stand with Jantar Mantar.” Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Secretary Manuel Badwar, who joined students protesting at Don Bosco Square, noted that their backlash against the central NDA government reflects deep-seated frustration among youth whose educations are at risk
“We are here to show support and solidarity with the student community. This is a critical moment. The frustration among youth, especially students whose careers are being impacted by the government’s misadventures, is real,” Badwar said. “We stand with the students and with the rest of the country. The opposition parties in Delhi are raising this issue strongly and we believe every citizen should support them. We are with them (the students), and we will continue to be with them. The country’s future needs a new trajectory, not the one we are on today,” the Congress leader added.
“Paper leaks are happening at the state level too. Education is becoming expensive and privatised, with no quality.
