Students rally for clean Kohima

Around 1600 students including teachers from 33 different schools in Kohima took part in an awareness rally calling for a plastic free environment under the theme, “My Waste My Responsibility” here on August 3.

The rally was organised by All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) Kohima Unit in collaboration with Kohima Smart City Development Limited under the 100 days Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation.

The rally started from their respective schools and converged at Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima (LFHSS) where a brief programme was held. Speaking at the event, Kohima ADC, Lithrongla Thongpi Rutsa said, it was the educated, who litters and ultimately to be picked up the illiterate and uneducated people.

Stating the adage cleanliness begins at home, Rutsa reminded the students to practice whatever they’ve learned and make it their responsibility to share with their siblings and parents.

The students were also advised to manage their trash and carry own water bottles to schools rather than buying packaged water bottles. Observing that despite the tremendous efforts of KMC and the active participation of all the colonies, wastes were lying out in the open, ANPSA Kohima Unit president, P. J Nathan said “it is our responsibility as educators and educated to sensitize students, parents and the general public on the issues concerning our environment.”

He requested the KMC to explore the possibilities for increasing the frequency of garbage collection not only in colonies but in various crucial points. He also encouraged the students to have the courage and willingness to spread today’s theme wherever they go.

Also speaking during the event, CEO KSCDL, Kovi Meyase said it was inspiring to see so many realizing its duty and responsibility towards the environment.

He added KSCDL was happy to see fresh initiatives from students and teachers as it strikes the core concept of what a smart city was all about.

He further added that Smart City was not just about building infrastructures nor a one-time beautification of the city. He further called upon the students to carry forward their action-oriented message in taking proactive approach towards protecting the environment.

Ella Mary of Green Team Kohima demonstrated on the importance of waste segregation.
