A week-long Project Subroto/District Sub-junior Football Coaching Camp for children aged 10–13 commenced at Thizama ground in Kohima district on Saturday. The programme is organised by Vision Hill School (VHS) in collaboration with the Football License Coaches of Kohima District and under the patronage of Kohima District Football Association (KDFA).
Speaking at the inaugural function, KDFA president, Mhasimhalie Mathew, encouraged the young players to recognise their potential and pursue football with discipline and determination.
He pointed out that the Subroto Cup, which features U-17 category for girls and U-15 for boys, provided opportunities for promising players to showcase their talent at the national level. Mathew further stressed that winning at the state level could open avenues for Nagaland players to compete in Delhi and Bangalore, adding that those who approached the game with commitment would go a long way.
Delivering the keynote address, VHS managing board chairman, Kethosituo Mepfhüo, said the camp was designed to train sub-junior players with the potential to represent Kohima and Nagaland in higher competitions. He revealed that the school envisioned establishing a football academy and developing a futsal ground to nurture young talent, while also assuring that future programmes would involve qualified coaches to ensure proper training.
The inaugural programme was chaired by VHS managing board secretary, Peter Vizo, while the opening prayer was offered by teacher Kekhrieletuonuo.
Around 50 boys and girls have registered for the camp. Participants include students from Don Bosco School, St. Luke School Thizama, 4th NAP Regimental School Thizama, Vision Hill School, Mezhür, Northfield, and G. Rio School. The coaching sessions are being conducted by AFC-C licensed coach, Leketoulie Liezietsu, along with AIFF-D licensed coaches, Neiphrezolie Üsou and Thangchapu Rongmei. The camp is expected to serve as a platform for young footballers in Kohima to hone their skills under professional guidance and prepare for exposure at the national level.
