The Sumi Chess Association Nagaland (SCAN) inaugurated its new Office-cum-Coaching Centre at Stall No. 20, DMC Shopping Complex, New Market, in Dimapur on Saturday.
The newly inaugurated coaching centre is expected to serve as a hub for chess training and development for aspiring players in Dimapur and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the programme, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) councillor Ward-19, Kili N. Sumi, expressed surprise at learning about the existence and activities of the Sumi Chess Association Nagaland and admitted that she had previously been unaware of the association’s initiatives. She apologized for not knowing about the organization earlier and commended the association for its efforts in promoting chess among the younger generation.
She described chess as a refined and intellectual sport, emphasizing that it is not a rough or rowdy game but one that requires patience, discipline and strategic thinking.
Addressing the coaches and organizers, she said that teaching chess is also about instilling patience and character in young learners, adding that mentors play a crucial role in shaping the mindset of budding players.
Referring to the journey of Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, she shared that while researching about him she learned how his parents supported and encouraged his interest in chess from a young age. She mentioned that Anand even wrote about his early experiences with the game in the 1980s, and today he has become one of the most renowned chess players in the world.
Drawing inspiration from this example, she said that parents may not always be aware of their children’s hidden talents, but it is their responsibility to recognize and support their interests. She encouraged parents to nurture their children’s passions rather than forcing them into predetermined paths, noting that with the right encouragement and opportunities, many young people could also achieve national and international recognition.
She further urged the association to serve not only as an administrative body but also as a source of motivation for young players, emphasizing that its role should extend beyond financial management to actively nurturing and guiding aspiring chess talents in the state.
The programme was chaired by SCAN general secretary Bovito Yeptho, invocation led by pastor of Mishikito, Rev. Dr. Khatoyi Kinimi, presentation was carried out by SCAN president Itovi Awomi and special song was presented by Asuvi Kiho.
Later, vote of thanks was delivered by SCAN joint secretary Tokato Yeptho. The special guest also unveiled the Silver Jubilee Souvenir of the association and addressed the gathering.
